At this year's festival we're gearing up to embrace the 90s as vintage! Oh yes siree. We catch up with two of our fave Vintage Marketplace dealers and 90s fanatics Helen from Dusty and Dylan and Hazel from Rag&Bow to talk us through their key 90s looks and inspirations from the decade...
Helen says: "Following the massive 90s revival & my personal love for the decade a lot of my stock for both guys & gals is very 90s influenced! Some of the pieces I'm bringing to Vintage include – anything cropped, so tee’s, blouses & waistcoats in lace, velvet, crochet & floral fabrics, high waisted blue stonewash jeans (think Guess & Versace), bralettes, 90s boy band tees, buffalo & platform boots, Dr Marten boots, black biker jackets, Fresh Prince style shirts & jackets in neon/graphic prints, denim stripe wrangler shirts (in pinks/pale blues), anything Versace influenced, Chanel influenced accessories, chokers & cross pendants. I’m also hoping to get hold of some mood rings!
The Versace jeans and platform boots are really key pieces that immediately create a great 90s look.
There are a lot of influences, mainly from films and tv. The key ones are Drew Barrymore in Poison Ivy, Cassandra in Wayne’s World, Kelly Kapowski in Saved by the Bell, Fresh Prince, early 90s Vanessa Paradis, the Guess Jeans, Versace & Calvin Klein ads, Lisa Bonnet, the Spice Girls & Clueless!
Hazel says "Here at Rag&Bow: The Roaming Vintage Store™ we look for beauty, individuality and wearability when sourcing our collections. We pride ourselves on trend forecasting so the 90s influence has been on our radar since the beginning of 2011. At the Vintage Festival we’ll be bringing our big sellers of the moment, trucker caps, cropped logo T-Shirts, 90s grunge button down dresses, print crazy bustiers, bum bags, chain print shirts and statement bomber jackets.
We LOVE our silk mix Escada bomber jacket with its multi-coloured neon print, a definite collector’s item! It can be easily worn with a long black body-con maxi skirt and high tops. We never advise a head-to-toe look in any decade, self-expression rather than mimicry is our mantra. Anyone can chuck on heavy a gold chain necklace, bold statement t-shirt or one of our 90s dresses and look extremely current. The key is not to replicate that hackneyed, ‘Fresh Prince of Bel Air’ almost fancy dress look in its entirety but buy pieces that you genuinely love which fit into your current wardrobe.
We say get some wear high waisted pale denim boyfriend jeans, a neon crop top and dance like its 1999!
Inspiration wise we love Demi Moore in Indecent Proposal, Neneh Cherry, Aaliyah, Lisa Bonet, Janet Jackson in Poetic Justice and Kate Moss in her Johnny Depp phase. Perfection.
Dusty and Dylan and Rag&Bow will both be selling their rad vintage collections in the Vintage Marketplace at the Vintage Festival this year!
